What doesnât sound good about a 5 star adults-only all inclusive? Exactly. Nothing. But just because a resort has the â5 starâ label, doesnât necessarily mean itâs the perfect resort for you.Â
In early May, I got the opportunity to stay at Devossion by Live Aqua in Playa del Carmen, and Iâm going to tell you exactly what I thought about it and if itâs the right resort for your vacation. Letâs break it down:
First Impressions: Pulling into the resort, I was in awe. The lobby was so stunning with a beautiful view of the ocean, which immediately brought a sense of peace and relaxation. In fact, you can see the sparkling blue water from pretty much anywhere in the resort. We were immediately greeted with cold towels and a refreshing juice. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful right off the bat, and check in was quick and easy.Â
Food & Drinks: There are 8 restaurants at this resort, along with several cafes and bars. In my opinion, there was a very wide variety of different food and cuisine options amongst them. The breakfast buffet had an incredible amount of different options and the food did not taste like âbuffet food.â The different cuisines include Japanese, Mexican, Italian, and even a steakhouse. Even the room service (which was included) had a solid amount of options. My favorite amongst the different restaurants was 100% their steakhouse Carnivore. It is an additional charge, but it is without a doubt worth it. I was very impressed with their filet, and even went back a second time to have it again.
Rooms & Suites: I stayed in one of the resortâs two queen partial ocean view rooms, and overall, I was really happy with the space! One of my favorite features was the amount of closet space. I was able to have an entire closet to myself as there were two in our room. I also loved how many mirrors there were throughout the room and the little vanity area. These small details made getting ready so much easier, especially if youâre sharing a room with multiple people. The in-room Nespresso machine was something I definitely appreciated as a coffee addict. One thing I did notice was that I could hear people talking and being a little loud at night, but it wasnât something that bothered me personally or affected my stay.Â
During my time at the resort, I also had the opportunity to tour some of the upgraded room categories, which offered even more space, amenities, and even a personal jacuzzi on the balcony! Depending on your priorities and budget, there are definitely some great room options to choose from.
Pools & Beach: There are 2 pools in the main area of the resort and 1 pool in the spa. The 2 main pools are very nice with plenty of chairs surrounding them. They also overlook the beach and ocean, making it very relaxing. During my stay, there was a DJ by the pool almost all the time and they played chill music during the day, but switched to more upbeat music as the evening went on. Private daybeds are available at an extra charge unless you have a suite (you get one included with the suite). There are also plenty of chairs available on the beach. The pools do not have a swim-up bar, but service is quick and available at both the beach and the pools. Unfortunately when I went, there was a lot of sargassum on the beach, but this isnât really something the hotel can control. It just might be something to note if you like to swim in the ocean.
Activities & Entertainment: There were a few activities that we did such as a Huichol art activity and a mezcal tasting. Both were very fun and something I had never done before! They also had a Bubble Soiree event open to all guests that had food, drinks, a DJ, and more. Something that really surprised me was their champagne toast at 1:26 every day. They chose this time because of the resortâs location, which is at the corner of 1st Avenue and 26th Street. Everything stops and guests gather by the pool for a fun group celebration. I personally felt like there weren't a TON of activities to do at the resort besides eating, drinking, and laying by the pool, but if thatâs your type of vacation then this resort is perfect for you. There were a few small activities here and there, but nothing too crazy or adventurous.Â
Spa & Wellness: Sadly I didnât get to actually take advantage of the spa during my visit. However, I was able to tour it, and it was incredible. From the unique Cenote Spa, to the swimming pool, to the meditation area, thereâs truly something for everyone. You simply walk in and immediately feel relaxed. I toured the gym as well and it was a pretty decent size. It had all of the necessities that you may need and was open 24 hours, so you can workout at any time of the day.
Nightlife: As far as nightlife at the resort, your options are a little limited. Thereâs a speakeasy bar which I found really fun and unique. It didnât get busy until a little bit later in the night, though. Thereâs also a sports bar on the property, but it wasnât ever busy during my stay. Other than that, there arenât any night clubs actually on property. However, the resort itself is located directly next to 5th Avenue, a very popular tourist street known for shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. So if nightlife is what youâre looking for and you donât mind leaving the property, this is still an option for you.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Devossion by Live Aqua. I was blown away by the service, food, and just overall atmosphere, and I could genuinely see myself returning.Â
I think this resort would be a great fit for couples, honeymooners, girls' getaways, and even solo travelers who want a more upscale and relaxing experience. If youâre looking for a peaceful getaway but still like having the option to step off the resort and explore, the location right next to 5th Avenue is also a huge plus.Â
The biggest thing to know before booking is that this is more of a ârelax by the pool with a drink in handâ type of resort than a âwake up and have a packed schedule of activitiesâ type of vacation. If you're someone who wants a huge nightlife scene, tons of daily activities, or constant entertainment, there may be other resorts that are a better fit. But if your idea of the perfect vacation is beautiful views, great food, attentive service, and plenty of time to actually unwind, Devossion is definitely worth considering. After experiencing the resort for myself, I would absolutely stay here again, and I'd be happy to recommend it to the right traveler!
