Some of the top activities Costa Rica has to offer...
You want to visit Costa Rica! Awesome, we can help get you there. But one of the questions we’ll ask in helping you do so is what you’d like to see and do there. Relax? Explore nature? Seek adventure? All the above and more? Probably. There is just so much available, we’ll need to have a serious discussion on what your priorities are. To help we’ve put together a list of eight of the best activities to do during your visit. After reading let us know what’s on the top of yours!
8 Great Activities Costa Rica Has To Offer
1. Hiking – An activity that likely is top of mind when you think of Costa Rica and there certainly is no shortage of places to do so. Volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests – the choice is yours. Once that’s settled, think about the level of difficulty you’re comfortable with. These two things will help in the best recommendation. Additionally, it is suggested you consider guided hikes. Your expert leader will be able to provide general assistance and a trained eye to spot wildlife.
2. Surfing – Surfers from around the world frequent Costa Rica year-round because of its warm waters and waves. Choose your coast – Pacific or Caribbean, select your level of experience – beginner, intermediate, or advanced. We can even make some recommendations. If you’re in need of a lesson, they’re typically easy to find, even just by stepping foot on some beaches!
3. Snorkeling and Scuba – Wildlife sightings aren’t limited to land. There are 7,000+ marine species that can be found in Costa Rica’s surrounding waters. So, it is no surprise that it is on the top of the list for water activities. If you’re a snorkeler, think about if you’d like to do so by boat or shore. If a diver, we can help recommend dive sites. Just let us know your level of experience.
4. Whitewater Rafting – Costa Rica provides a stunning background for this adventure. There are a few areas that would be recommended if this is something you’d like to do. Beginner or advanced, let us know what intensity of rapids you’re comfortable with, and we can point you in the right direction. If the kiddos are up for the challenge, there are some options that are suitable for them too. It’s a great family activity!
5. Visit Waterfalls – Some of the most picturesque sights in Costa Rica can be found at its numerous waterfalls. After all, there’s something so magical about water cascading over a cliff to the pools below. There are plenty of options to choose from, just keep in mind a few things. Some falls will require a hike to access, entrance fees will vary, and some allow swimming while others do not. Also consider a guided tour if you won’t have access to a rental car during your stay.
6. Zip Lining – If you’ve Googled “excursions in Costa Rica” you’ve likely seen a picture of someone effortlessly flying over green canopy, rivers, and cliffs. It’s a very popular activity that can be found all over the country. You should expect a safety demo and a short hike. Then you’ll glide line by line, each getting a little longer than the one before. If you’re an adrenaline seeker this is a must do! If not, we wouldn’t recommend it. Do not invest money in something if you’re not 100% comfortable with.
7. Bird Watching – It isn’t unusual for people to travel to Costa Rica for this very reason. Some enthusiasts even build a whole itinerary around this activity. There is 900+ species and most often seen will likely be toucans, macaws, and hummingbirds. Because the country is so eco-diverse, make a couple of watching stops. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
8. Yoga – Yes, you read that right! Costa Rica is indeed a haven for yoga lovers. You could see or take a class quite literally anywhere – a resort, beach, volcano, or rainforest. If you’re a beginner, give it a try at least once. If you’re a wellness enthusiast and it’s your reason for travel, it belongs on your list. Think wellness retreat, group trip for your studio, location for instructor training or continuing education.
There you have it, some of the best that Costa Rica has to offer! Of course, there’s a ton more that isn’t listed, so if you have any questions let us know. If you’re ready to explore all that Costa Rica has to offer, please feel free to reach out!

Lara did an amazing job planning our trip. Everything was in order and had no issues from beginning to end. Thank you for all your help. -Antonio W.
Lara helped us tremendously with our last minute trip. We were worried about finding a place to stay within budget and were crunched on time, but within no time Lara was able to find a great spot well below budget. She made the trip planning a breeze. I would highly recommend giving her a try! -Colton W.
I had such a wonderful experience working with Lara while planning a very complicated cross-country trip. We were traveling with 3 adults and 2 large dogs, and she somehow managed to find hotels that were comfortable, pet-friendly and in great locations. She was incredibly responsive, patient, organized, and thoughtful with every detail. What really impressed me was her level of follow-up throughout the entire trip. She consistently checked in to make sure everything was going smoothly, asked how each hotel worked out for us, and was always quick to help if we needed to make adjustments or had questions along the way. It truly felt like she cared about our experience from start to finish. Moving across the country is stressful enough, but having someone take the time to research great options and make the process feel easier was such a huge help. I would absolutely recommend Lara to anyone looking for a travel agent who goes above and beyond and makes travel planning feel personal instead of overwhelming. -Angela D.

What doesn’t sound good about a 5 star adults-only all inclusive? Exactly. Nothing. But just because a resort has the “5 star” label, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the perfect resort for you.
In early May, I got the opportunity to stay at Devossion by Live Aqua in Playa del Carmen, and I’m going to tell you exactly what I thought about it and if it’s the right resort for your vacation. Let’s break it down:
First Impressions: Pulling into the resort, I was in awe. The lobby was so stunning with a beautiful view of the ocean, which immediately brought a sense of peace and relaxation. In fact, you can see the sparkling blue water from pretty much anywhere in the resort. We were immediately greeted with cold towels and a refreshing juice. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful right off the bat, and check in was quick and easy.
Food & Drinks: There are 8 restaurants at this resort, along with several cafes and bars. In my opinion, there was a very wide variety of different food and cuisine options amongst them. The breakfast buffet had an incredible amount of different options and the food did not taste like “buffet food.” The different cuisines include Japanese, Mexican, Italian, and even a steakhouse. Even the room service (which was included) had a solid amount of options. My favorite amongst the different restaurants was 100% their steakhouse Carnivore. It is an additional charge, but it is without a doubt worth it. I was very impressed with their filet, and even went back a second time to have it again.
Rooms & Suites: I stayed in one of the resort’s two queen partial ocean view rooms, and overall, I was really happy with the space! One of my favorite features was the amount of closet space. I was able to have an entire closet to myself as there were two in our room. I also loved how many mirrors there were throughout the room and the little vanity area. These small details made getting ready so much easier, especially if you’re sharing a room with multiple people. The in-room Nespresso machine was something I definitely appreciated as a coffee addict. One thing I did notice was that I could hear people talking and being a little loud at night, but it wasn’t something that bothered me personally or affected my stay.
During my time at the resort, I also had the opportunity to tour some of the upgraded room categories, which offered even more space, amenities, and even a personal jacuzzi on the balcony! Depending on your priorities and budget, there are definitely some great room options to choose from.
Pools & Beach: There are 2 pools in the main area of the resort and 1 pool in the spa. The 2 main pools are very nice with plenty of chairs surrounding them. They also overlook the beach and ocean, making it very relaxing. During my stay, there was a DJ by the pool almost all the time and they played chill music during the day, but switched to more upbeat music as the evening went on. Private daybeds are available at an extra charge unless you have a suite (you get one included with the suite). There are also plenty of chairs available on the beach. The pools do not have a swim-up bar, but service is quick and available at both the beach and the pools. Unfortunately when I went, there was a lot of sargassum on the beach, but this isn’t really something the hotel can control. It just might be something to note if you like to swim in the ocean.
Activities & Entertainment: There were a few activities that we did such as a Huichol art activity and a mezcal tasting. Both were very fun and something I had never done before! They also had a Bubble Soiree event open to all guests that had food, drinks, a DJ, and more. Something that really surprised me was their champagne toast at 1:26 every day. They chose this time because of the resort’s location, which is at the corner of 1st Avenue and 26th Street. Everything stops and guests gather by the pool for a fun group celebration. I personally felt like there weren't a TON of activities to do at the resort besides eating, drinking, and laying by the pool, but if that’s your type of vacation then this resort is perfect for you. There were a few small activities here and there, but nothing too crazy or adventurous.
Spa & Wellness: Sadly I didn’t get to actually take advantage of the spa during my visit. However, I was able to tour it, and it was incredible. From the unique Cenote Spa, to the swimming pool, to the meditation area, there’s truly something for everyone. You simply walk in and immediately feel relaxed. I toured the gym as well and it was a pretty decent size. It had all of the necessities that you may need and was open 24 hours, so you can workout at any time of the day.
Nightlife: As far as nightlife at the resort, your options are a little limited. There’s a speakeasy bar which I found really fun and unique. It didn’t get busy until a little bit later in the night, though. There’s also a sports bar on the property, but it wasn’t ever busy during my stay. Other than that, there aren’t any night clubs actually on property. However, the resort itself is located directly next to 5th Avenue, a very popular tourist street known for shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. So if nightlife is what you’re looking for and you don’t mind leaving the property, this is still an option for you.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Devossion by Live Aqua. I was blown away by the service, food, and just overall atmosphere, and I could genuinely see myself returning.
I think this resort would be a great fit for couples, honeymooners, girls' getaways, and even solo travelers who want a more upscale and relaxing experience. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway but still like having the option to step off the resort and explore, the location right next to 5th Avenue is also a huge plus.
The biggest thing to know before booking is that this is more of a “relax by the pool with a drink in hand” type of resort than a “wake up and have a packed schedule of activities” type of vacation. If you're someone who wants a huge nightlife scene, tons of daily activities, or constant entertainment, there may be other resorts that are a better fit. But if your idea of the perfect vacation is beautiful views, great food, attentive service, and plenty of time to actually unwind, Devossion is definitely worth considering. After experiencing the resort for myself, I would absolutely stay here again, and I'd be happy to recommend it to the right traveler!
